David AKA Tug
Hey there!
I'm Dave, the newest member of the ITM Fishing Team. I'm the Camera Op and Editor on the show, so in a nutshell it's my job to make Matt look good! Unfortunately, being more of a "Stag Do Specialist" when it comes to fishing, I don't really have any self portraits of me struggling under the strain of gargantuan fish like the other guys profiles. I'll be honest with you, I'm more comfortable with a camera in hand than a fishing rod, but I'm sure over the course of the year this deficit can be remedied.
Over the past 10 years I've been lucky enough to have traveled the world as part of a number of high profile international shows, and I'm sure with what we have planned over the upcoming months, the ITM Fishing show will be one of the shows at the top of that list. I've shot in some pretty diverse and chaotic locations around the globe; India, Thailand, Morocco, the US, the Eastern Bloc, but nothing could really prepare me for my first day's filming on Matt's Stabi 10 miles off the Northland coast in high seas! After a violent 5 minute vomiting episode I figured I'd thrown my chances of working on the show overboard along with my breakfast, but I've since managed to develop my sea legs and am really looking forward to the challenges we have in store over the next couple of years.
I've always loved the production process, having gotten a taste of TV at 9 years of age when my next door neighbour got hold of a Camcorder and we spent hours and hours writing, storyboarding, filming and editing our own goofy 5 minute action classics such as "Revenge of the Killer Grapefruit" and "The Phantom Farter". After finishing my studies at Tauranga Boys College and completing my BSc in Zoology at Otago Uni, I decided I'd attempt that always risky move of trying to convert a hobby into a career. I bit the bullet and moved north up to the big smoke, where I was lucky enough to cut my TV teeth on shows such as the Lion Man, The Sports Hour, Shock Treatment, & Game of Two Halves.
A stint in the UK then followed, and after three years gallivanting around London, Belfast and Cardiff getting a bit of international experience under my belt, the wife and I decided we were tired of the big city life and that it was high time to get back to our roots and drop anchor back in NZ, where as luck would have it, Matt and the team were on the hunt for a new crew member, and the rest of the story is still to be written...
