MATT'S AWAY... SO KATE HAS HER SAY
12:54PM 9th Jun 09
Girls are no longer just brought along on boats for ‘Lady Luck', or to make the sandwiches. We are seeing less and less of the boys heading off for a days fishing, while the girls stay at home tending children. In fact we are now seeing more and more ladies out on the water with the lads, and even tackling the records on offer. Women are now specifically catered for, and can experience fishing with purpose built gear; and not just the same gear with a pink paint job, but gear that's designed with us in mind. The Shimano Lipsticks, and the re-introduction of smaller spinning and bait casting reels, have made female angling more practical as it is fashioned to our style of fishing... that is of course the style of brains over brawn!

Such purpose designed equipment allows me to fish longer and get more enjoyment out of the sport. The other plus is that no one is likely to steal my gear (I just can't see Kezza with a pink Lipstick in his hand... although he is always first in line to read my womens magazines!)

So let's hear it for female angling and well done to those manufactures that have seen the light and started producing gear with the fairer sex in mind. Can I say "sex" in your magazine Grant without the fellas getting all excited?

When I started working at the ITM Fishing Show I didn't really know what was in store for me... I just knew it sounded like lots of fun... boats, boys, and beers, what more could a girl want in a job? Though when I found myself running through the gorse pig hunting, I started wondering what I had let myself in for - but let me assure you I have not had any regrets!

I've now been with the show for over three years. How far we've come, and what adventures we've had a long the way. As well as pig hunting escapades, I have been up close and personal with great white sharks at the Chatham Islands, had close encounters with big bears in Alaska, have waited for "just the right wave" to cross the Hokianga and Greymouth bars, and spent balmy days on the water with some of New Zealand's most classic characters. Who knows what the future holds? But whatever it is, I know it is going to be exciting!

Being the only female in a male environment has its challenges, but now with the advent of the She-wee, I can be more like the boys than ever! I count The ITM Fishing Show chaps as some of my best mates. Recently, accompanied by their delightful partners, they attended my wedding... although I suspect some of the guests were more excited about seeing Matt, than they were about seeing me in my wedding dress!!

Over the last wee while Ive been tuning into the fishing show, its good and everyone seems very enthusiastic and looks like they are having a great time. What Im wondering though, why dont they ever have any women out there on those trips?  They could take a crew of women fishing for a change couldnt they, Im not even a great fishing-man/women.. but would love to have a go or just would like to see some chickies on there for a change. -or is the show a 'man' thing? :-)

What a fantastic read Kate

I am by definition a blokes bloke , well, I think I am...could be wrong

Tell you what tho, I have two daughters, no sons....my daughters will be taught that "Girls can do anything"
They are currently 6 and 3, Ive had a few cracks at getting them out there...just steady as she goes stuff....but make nothing more sure.....these girls will have every chance to foot it with the boys on the water if thats what they choose

And..."girls" like you Kate are an inspiration to the fairer sex....You go Girl

PS....I wrote this...not my wife

Yes we are an all woman crew out of Papa Aroha and have been for 6yrs +. Our Plumber always says we out fish him and his mates! We have fished on plastics for nearly 2 years, while we get bigger fish he does catch more on bait! Matt its time to encompass the fairer sex, we can launch boats, rig up lines, tackle sharks and sting rays, catch 12lbers+,help the other sex pull thier boats out of the water etc etc. We are waiting for your call to talk about a show along with Katie for woman. We dive for scallops and mussels and cook pavlova on the barbeque what more do you want?? Look forward to hearing form you!

Yea gidday I'm a keen as fisho and dabble in a bit of sailing and  think it would make some choice t.v. to see Matt catch a marlin from a high performance trailer sailer. He would need the right boat, crew+conditions but in NZ we build the best boats and sail them better than anyone in the world and sometimes have some superb conditions sure he would be up for it keep up the awesome show

My wife comes out with me every time.  She loves the outdoors and the fishing action.  I'm so lucky to have a wife who shares my interest and passion.  We love watching Matt's show - we find it informative as well as entertaining. Thanks ITM for sponsoring the show.
