Recent hunting and fishing trip

Hey Mates,

You can never get all the conditions 100% perfect when heading out filming in the field, however some of the best footage we've filmed is when we've had our backs against the wall; rough seas, fish not biting, then boom, we pull a special catch out of nowhere and get some hot action in the can. As we set out on our last shoot, the weather forecast was perfect; no wind, clear skies and we were heading to a slice of paradise on the Wairarapa coast where they get crayfish and paua in the rock pools… everything was in place and we were feeling confident.

We choppered into a remote hut known affectionately as 'the sugar shack'. With no power, no cell coverage and no internet connection, our plan was to get away from it all and 'live off the land and sea' for a week. If we couldn’t catch our own food we’d go hungry, it was that simple. Within a literal stones throw of the front deck of the shack there were crays and paua... which we would have gone and got if not for the 6 meter swells crashing over the rocks.

Great, no wind and not a cloud in the sky, but the swell prevented us from harvesting the delectable seafood that was so tantalizingly close. It was a good thing that a short stroll out the back door we had some venison (well not such a short stroll, rather a gut busting hike up the hill)... but none the less I stalked and shot my first stag with help from a couple of pro's. Not satisfied with venison for dinner for the whole week, we added to the menu, blue cod, trumpeter and tarakihi. While the fish listed are tasty, you’d hardly consider them sport fish… that is unless the trumpeter were up to 15kg, at this size they were more then a challenge on 10kg tackle. I’d love to see one of the 25kg trumpeters that the locals have caught.

So with more than enough fish to feed us for a week, it was time for some pork. With the help of the dogs, Rocky, Ferg and Ace, we got a couple of boars... then what do you know the swell subsides and we get some paua.  Now I've skimmed over the details, but of course with me and a few hard-case Kiwi blokes in the outdoors for a week, there was plenty of shenanigans caught on film; like a run in with a couple of fighting bulls that decided to come after me and cameraman Dave. I haven't been so excited about getting footage into the edit suite in a long time, so it's got to be good.

Keep 'em tight
Matt

Hi Matt,
I have my Dad here, telling me, he watched your show on fishing for flounder on the Kiapara. He was a fish monger for 30 years and so was his father who  did the same for 30 years before him. They dealt a lot with flounder fisherman from the Kiapara through those years and never came across a giant flounder. He smells a rat or at least maybe a turbot from somewhere else other than the Kiapara.
Can you fill us in?
Cheers.

Hi Matt,

You might think your intelligent in tagging tiger sharks, your actually slowly killing them with those devices your placing on them.

And when you tailed that tiger shark and dragged it to the boat. All you where doing for that shark was drowning it! that much water being unatuarally forced through its fins will kill it, as does tagging these days! it puts fish under stress and they bruise and clot in their flesh.

You run a good fishing show that attracts amateurs!! but you probably killed all those tiger sharks with the strategy you used well done!! Pretty fucken stupid!!

Chris, Great comments mate but not needed. Matt was only helping out a research team not running the research. If you have a complaint hit up MAF with your issues. Us amateurs enjoy seeing all elements of fishing including the reseach projects. Matt, your more than welcome to continue what your doing. Cheers Simon

I'd go one step further and point out that if you'd spent more than ten seconds in the site, i.e. just coming in to complain, you'd have noticed that we have shown time and time again that tagging works and fish mortality is very high. You'd also notice that we have alot of kids contributing to the site... thus your use of language is not appreciated or welcome... go and be miserable somewhere else.

Hi Matt,
Me and 2 of my flat mates down in Dunedin have recently invested in a 14 foot surf casting rod and reel each. We've been looking on the net for tips about baiting, sinkers to use  , fishing locations and techniques etc  and we're wondering if u had any tips for us to catch some decent fish to feed the flat.

As being huge fans of the ITM fishing show, we were thinking u could come down to Dunedin to do a scarfie special on how to catch fish retrieve shell fish like paua and mussels, as we don't have a boat. We would stoked if u manage to come down and are willing to participate on the show haha
Cheers Fergus

Hi Matt, i am sure yiu get asked this question all the time, but here goes anyway. My 2 boys (Campbell 7 & Toby 6) love watching your show. Every Saturday we tune in and have great fun in watching you catch what ever species you are hunting. We have mysky so we record all episodes and the boys will watch these time and time again which is great as this is way better for them than watching some of those crappy cartoons. My question is when you are next in need of a "celebrity fisherman" on your show i am your man. My kids woudl get such a big buzz watching dad land a big kingy, marlin, waho or mahi mahi on your show. Give it some thought and email me if you are in need. Cheers and all the best Wayne

Great story Matt! I agree, technology is fantastic and has really helped the fishing recreation. But it's also really nice (and natural) just to go out there and rely on some old school luck too! f
