‘So what's the secret to catching so many fish?' It's a question often posed to me. My response is ‘I'm not sure there is a secret?... and if there was I'd tell you'. This may seem like I'm trying to keep the answer a jealously guarded secret, but the truth is there is no secret; the closest I can come to a broad reaching answer is by saying - "accumulate knowledge about the type of fishing you want to be good at". I don't have space on this page to give specific tips and techniques on all the types of fishing I've done over the years but I can let you know where to get it. There are two ways of accumulating ‘fishing knowledge'; the first and most effective is to go fishing, but be open to trying new things. Sure it's good to know a good spot, the rig that works in that spot, and the time of year and tide it fishes best, but no spot or method delivers all the time.
It's often hard to spend your limited leisure time on the water messing around finding a new spot or trying a new method, so we try to do this for you on the show. This brings me to the second way of accumulating knowledge - learning from others.
The ITM Fishing Show demonstrates the various methods and habitats to find and catch all manner of fish - once you've seen it done it becomes easier to try it yourself. The website you're in is full of advice from very knowledgeable fishers, many specialists in their particular genre of fishing. Don't take what the experts say as gospel, use it as a guide only because what works for one guy, in one place, at a certain time may not work for you; so try some variations.

Several people have asked me if we could do a DVD of our Hunting and Fishing New Zealand Tackle Tips so they can study all the pointers we give in this segment the end of our show. When I tell them that these tips are available to view for free on our website the standard response from the over-fourtys is "I don't know how to work that on a computer". Well if you are savvy enough to log onto the internet go to www.thefishingshow.co.nz/forum and click on the ‘Forum' icon in the top-middle of the page - fill out the log in details and you are there (if you have trouble get your 8 year old to help).

So once you have the knowledge you need to catch your chosen fish - the next thing and equally as important is ‘how not to lose it'. There are a million ways a fish can get away and some can't be avoided, but it is unforgivable if your gear gives out. I have no sympathy for guys that cry to me about their line breaking or reel ceasing when it transpires that it was some crappy brand or hadn't been replaced or maintained for years. The advice here is simple; buy good gear and keep it well maintained.

Keep ‘em tight

Matt
