Northland offers some of New Zealand's best fishing waters; with a huge variety of species and something to target all year round. It also just happens to be where the Fishing Show is based - so the fishing must be good!
The Hauraki Gulf and Waitemata Harbour has unquestionably some of the best fishing to be found in New Zealand, and when you consider its close proximity to Auckland, some of the most easily accessible fishing too.
The Bay of Plenty is a huge expanse of coastline that sweeps from the south eastern Coromandel Peninsula to the mighty East Cape, and as the name suggests it's plentiful!
The area offers excellent fishing and diving, along with beautiful scenery. Snapper, terakihi, kahawai, albacore, hapuku (groper) and the mighty yellowtail kingfish are found in abundance, and black, blue and striped marlin are also very common in this area. This is a place you need to come and fish!
The seas around Nelson provide shellfish of all kinds, and the harbour is home to New Zealand's largest fishing fleet. Nelson's climate, with the most hours of sunlight in the whole country, makes this top northwest corner of the South Island, a fantastic place to come and fish.
Famous for the giant blue fin tuna that congregate here in the winter, Greymouth also has year round plentiful stocks of kahawai, gurnard, red cod and sharks. You can also go deep sea fishing, targeting grouper, trumpeter, blue nose, albacore and skipjack tuna.
Stewart Island is New Zealand's third and southern-most island with some fantastic deep sea fishing and big game fishing to be enoyed, catering for all levels of skill and experience.
Of all the fishing trips we have done, our trip to the Chatham Islands was one of our most memorable. The place should definitely be on your list of places to fish.
