Black Marlin
Black Marlin (Makaira Indica) can be found in many places throughout the South Pacific, but without a doubt Cairns is where you want to be if you want to join the 1000 pounder club. These massive animals have a brief but prolific season off the Great Barrier Reef in Australia each year, with the larger females being on most skippers wish lists.
The size that some of these marlin consistently achieve is unrivaled in the marlin family and to watch one exploding beside the boat is a sight to behold. Many a deckie has looked sideways when pondering the task of leadering one of these scrappers. They are definitely a fish that every self respecting angler should have a go at once in their life, and then maybe twice, three times......

The Great Barrier Reef in Australia based out of Port Douglas in Cairns and Lizard Island. You'll also catch black marlin in New Zealand through the summer months and in New Caledonia, Tonga, Norfolk Island, Vanuatu and the Wanganella Banks.
