Dog tooth tuna (Gymnosarda unicolor) will stretch any angler; their a powerful and smart fish that will seek out any weakness in your tackle or look for a bit of foul to break you off on. It seems everything in the islands has got impressive dental work and these fish are no exception with a face only a mother could love. Whilst Doggies can be picked up in any depth of water the larger specimens are found near deep water bombies or reef pinacles that protrude up from deep water.

Think of a Yellowtail Kingfish on steriods and you're getting close. We had a recent experience where we lost a doggie to the reef so we checked the drag settings on the reel because we couldn't stop the thing. Well, we got a big lad to try and strip line from the reel and he couldn't budge the spool... yet this doggie pulled 80 Braid off a Stella like it was cotton.

Their tropical reef dwelling mates the Giant Trevally are equally as powerful and are a favourite fish to target when in the islands. Whether throwing poppers at coral reefs, trolling lures, baits, or dropping metal jigs, the fishing for these tropical terrors is full-on adrenalin pumping stuff. Many a fisho has been humbled by these seemingly average fish and have come away with no prize and a significantly lighter tackle box.

Both Doggies and GT's can be targetd in the same areas and we've had our best success in places like Vanuatu, New Caledonia and Tonga... and hey, even if the fishing gods aren't smiling you can bet the poople you'll meet in these paradises will be.
