No tuna is greater then the giant blue fin tuna (Thunnus thynnus). These brutes regularly go over 300kg (660lbs) and when their size is coupled to their unyielding power, sleek form and dogged determination they stand out as a true test of man against beast. While some fish have a characteristic fighting style, Giant Bluefin Tuna tend to have it all. Whether charging the boat, doing circles around you, steaming 400 meters off the reel or diving deep and holding, you and your skipper will be put to the ultimate test.

Unlike most parts of the world Bluefin Tuna are found in good numbers in New Zealand waters and due to responsible fishing practices, by the charter and recreational fleet, it looks like these stocks are here to stay. 

There has been a phenomenal new fishery discovered off the West coast of New Zealand out from Greymouth where these brutes congregrate each year to take advantage of the hoki fleet. Hooking up is relatively easy, but holding on is a whole other matter and being in the saddle is the only way to truly appreciate the power of these awesome fish.

The season for these monsters of the deep starts in August and goes through to October. Bookings are normally done on a per hour basis and this will be one of the most full on trips you will ever go on.
