Striped Marlin
The striped marlin (Teptrapturus Audax) found in New Zealand waters are the largest striped marlin in the world. These explosive and powerful fish are a popular target amongst many anglers around the world and taking the trip of a life time 'down under' is well worth the effort. We've filmed many segments with these skillful hunters and it's astounding to see how little they fear the underwater camerman or the tow cameras. They truly are kings of their domains with only big sharks offering any real threat.
Targeted with trolling lures, live baits , dead baits and plastic baits they can yield one of the more consistent hook up rates; but every time you think you've got them sorted they'll throw something else at you to keep you guessing. These fish start arriving in New Zealand from about December and stay until about May, with the Three Kings Islands offering trips into June.
If you are serious about tackling the spectacular Striped Marlin, then the Wanganella Banks and New Zealand are the places. New Zealand sees fish averaging around 100kg (220 lb) with regular catches of fish over 150 kg (330 lb). In New Zealand you can fish for striped marlin from January through to May from The Bay of Plenty, the City of Sails Auckland up to the world famous Bay of Islands, with the season at the fishing mecca of the Three Kings Islands extending through to the end of June. The Wanganella Banks fish well from January through to June and can be accessed easiest from Norfolk Island with some charters leaving from New Zealand.
