Tervally

The Trevally family is a large and somewhat mis-understood family with many variations appearing in the South Pacific. In New Zealand we tend to think of our Trevally as just a plain Trevally (Pseudocaranx dentex) but lots of debate has centered around this issue.

For many years Trevally was considered bait and not as a food fish. However as pallets have broadened many have discovered this sweet, white flesh fish, which makes the best raw fish, is well worth the effort; and then that the effort is quite a challange. The angler has to be cunning to catch Trevally and the use of small sharp hooks with fresh shellfish baits tends to produce the best results. Lurking in high current zones with lots of foul means landing one of these fish can be a challange. Throw in 7 or 8 kilo and you've got one hell of a battle on your hands.

Traditionally Trevally were targeted by recreational or commerical fisherman but the charter fleet are now using light spinning gear or fly outfits to target these fish and the international popularity appears to be growing rapidly. Found over most of the North Island your best chance of a monster exists in the Far North of the North Island.
