NZ Fishing News

As we come to terms with the Shortest day, there are still plenty of good fishing opportunities to be had.
With the weather not the best, you can always turn to the fishing magazines for some solace.
Lead feature this issue is Part One of three-part series on landbased gamefishing from Opotiki based guide Mark Draper. Over the years Mark has gained plenty of experience taking on these green torpedoes off the bricks and he is sharing his knowledge fined tuned from many days in the field.
Continuing along the land based theme, surfcaster Gary Kemsley is yet another to realise the benefits of soft plastic baits from the shore in the start to another series this issue.
In our offshore adventure department we have two extremes - Anthony Swainson relates the fishing experiences of his mate in Greenland targeting sharks under the ice while Mark Kitteridge explores warmer climates to take on the dogfish of Vava'u in his ‘knives to gunfights' feature.
Editor Grant Dixon made the most of the last of the autumn weather to head North where he put a range of new tackle to the test. Over the years Sam Mossman has caught many species, some of which many of us might turn our noses up as table fish. Sam, in the second and final part to his ‘the other table fish' article, looks at some culinary alternatives. Craig Worthington also continues his species hunt, ticking amberjack off the list.
For the soft bait aficionados, charter skipper Damian Clayton looks at the advantages of both worm hook and jig head rigs while kayak fisher suggests ways of adding gurnard to the menu over the winter months.
As we head into the Bluefin Tuna season, the experts at Bluewater Research give readers a run down on the tagging programme to date.
Other features include tips for winter lake fishing for trout, a location guide to the Waimakariri river, an interview with one of the characters of the fishing scene, charter boat skipper Barry Kearney as well as news and views from around the country.
